Verdantix Names Smart Innovators In The Emerging Market For Industrial Wearables

New York – August 22, 2018. A new study by independent research firm Verdantixidentifies twenty-eight industrial wearables suppliers that EHS executives should target for pilot projects and broader roll outs. The study recommends that firms with innovative EHS strategies engage with wearables vendors because fifty-eight per cent of 221 managers surveyed by Verdantix believe industrial wearable technology will have a significant impact on operational risk management by 2020.

“Safety leaders already have budgets for personal protective equipment which ranges from 27% to 36% of their total spending depending on the industry” commented Steve Bolton, Verdantix Research Director. “Tapping this existing budget line facilitates spending on digital wearables such as belts containing gas and noise sensors or jackets with embedded ergonomic hazard monitors. The main hurdle for customers is figuring out what industrial wearables are the best fit for the hazards they are aiming to eliminate.”

The report, “Smart Innovators: Industrial Wearables”, assesses twenty-eight industrial wearables vendors and places them in four categories of functionality to facilitate customer purchase plans.

Location Tracking Wearables

Wearables for location tracking provide functionality to alert workers about hazardous working environments, send warnings to avoid worker/vehicle collisions and signal that a worker is immobilized. The eleven providers of technology for worker location tracking include Airsweb, Extronics, Modjoul, Realwear, Triax Technologies and Vault Intelligence.

Vital Signs Monitoring

Wearables for vital signs monitoring address workplace hazards such as drowsy equipment or vehicle operators, lone-worker bio-metric signs monitoring and risks from unsafe environmental conditions. The ten smart innovators of vital signs or bio-metric monitoring devices identified in the study include Equivital, Honeywell, Kenzen, Logical Safety, MākuSafe, Optalert, Sole Power and Vigo Technologies.

Contextual Risk Management Information

Wearables also help manage workplace hazards where contextual information about equipment or an incident such as a chemical spill or fire can improve risk management and corrective actions. Digital wearables providing contextual information include Extronics T3 Tag, Gensuite’s Inspection Tool, Intellinium’s Safety Shoes, RealWear HMT-1, XOi Vision, Upskill’s Skylight and.

Musculoskeletal Protection

Industrial wearables also address workplace hazards caused by routines which result in movements that cause musculoskeletal injuries. Examples being lifting beer kegs into trucks and filling compactors with sheep fleeces. The smart innovators in this market segment consist of Kinetic, Reactec and Soter Analytics.

“Industrial wearables hold significant promise for health and safety professionals seeking new approaches to eliminating long-standing workplace hazards” commented David Metcalfe, Verdantix CEO. “To accelerate adoption of their technologies, wearables vendors need to invest more time in addressing technology adoption challenges, change management issues and return on investment calculations. Even though millions of consumers happily use wearables, deployment of similar devices in an industrial context throws up problems with data privacy, connectivity and fire hazard risks.”
